Q&A

  • What was your first pet?
A turtle. My father accidentally stepped on it with his dress shoes. The turtle was never the same after.

  • What’s your favorite way to spend your commuting time?
In the morning, reading a book. In the evening, reading the newspaper. If I can’t find a seat on the El during the evening commute, I listen to classical music or jazz with my eyes closed. So far, I haven’t been robbed.

  • What was your very first job?
During my senior year in high school and that summer (1968) I worked in a factory and warehouse in what was then North Pier Terminal, across from Navy Pier. My job was at the dock, loading and unloading trucks. I worked without having to wear a shirt. A prospect that was not as frightening then as it would be today. My two friends also worked in the company. The one who worked in the office is now a PHD psychologist. The other was given rubber gloves, detergent and a scrub brush, and was responsible for cleaning the toilets. Today he is a merger and acquisitions specialist and an investment banker.
