Marc S. Joseph

Partner

Marc Joseph is a partner in the Real Estate and Corporate Groups and is a former member of the firm's Executive Committee. He is also a certified public accountant. With more than 35 years of experience in corporate, real estate, finance law, Marc has extensive experience with a diverse area of legal and business matters.

Throughout his career, Marc has been a transactional lawyer and has handled complex corporate and real estate matters, including acquisitions, dispositions, and joint venture and partnership agreements involving preferred returns, buy-sells and control issues.

From a financing perspective, Marc has represented both lender and borrower on matters involving loan documentation, workouts, restructuring, participations, and tri-party agreements.

Marc works to bring a proactive, business-oriented approach to sophisticated transactions, while consistently being mindful of his clients' individual goals. Marc invests his time in understanding his clients' business objectives and finding a practical and efficient approach to accomplish these objectives.

  • What’s the best compliment you ever received from a client?
    The best compliment I ever received from a client was “you just get it,” which I took to mean that I got the client’s goals for the deal and what the client wanted to accomplish, I understood the transaction and what was important to accomplish and protect the client and I interacted with the other side in a way that made the transaction go smoothly.

  • What’s the biggest mistake attorneys can make?
    I believe the biggest mistake an attorney can make is being an obstacle as opposed to a facilitator of a deal. It is obviously important to protect the client, but it is equally important to accomplish what the client wants, which is to get the deal done efficiently and effectively.

  • What was your very first job?
    My first job was working at my dad’s small grocery store in a very tough neighborhood in Chicago at the age of 10. I actually volunteered to work because my dad worked seven days a week and I wanted to spend time with him. In hindsight, not the best idea, but I got to spend time with my dad, understand what it takes to run a business and meet a payroll and develop a strong work ethic.
