Corporate Social Responsibility

LP believes that doing right and doing well are inseparable.

At Levenfeld Pearlstein, our Corporate Social Responsibility program is deliberate and thoughtful. This approach can be seen through our environmentally sustainable practices, investment in our employees, and our strategic philanthropic direction that is impactful rather than merely supplemental. Our goal is to make a difference for our clients, in our community, and on behalf of the individuals and organizations that are leading the way. When our community does better, we all do better, so it is our duty to our clients, who make our CSR efforts possible, to approach those efforts with mindful consideration and execution.

Our approach to charitable giving.

Social responsibility is respect for people around us and our community as a whole. In addition to supporting attorneys who devote time to the charities of their choosing, many years ago the firm adopted a policy of contributing a standard percentage of the firm’s revenue to charitable endeavors. In order to make the greatest impact, the firm focuses primarily on two programs: Chicago’s Community Kitchens (CCK) and Cristo Rey.

Chicago's Community Kitchens

CCK is a job training program affiliated with the Greater Chicago Food Depository that prepares unemployed or underemployed adults for careers in foodservice. Students spend their 14 weeks in the program doing hands-on training in the kitchen, classroom learning and participating in a two-week internship at a CCK partnership site.

Not only do we make a concerted effort to increase catered food for firm events from CCK partners, we support it with donations, volunteer days at the Greater Chicago Food Depository and through our successful holiday gift in 2015 (see the video to your right). LP’s relationship with CCK was highlighted in the Crain’s 2016 Giving Guide in an article titled “A Lasting Alliance: Corporate Sponsors See Big Dividends from Long-Term Charitable Partnerships.”

Cristo Rey

For the past 10 years, LP has supported the program in which high school students can gain real life work experience while earning money that directly goes toward their tuition. Our participation in the program enables the students to receive a college preparatory high school education at no cost, something the students would not otherwise be able to afford.

One hundred percent of the students who graduate from Cristo Rey are accepted to college. Given that these students are from a socioeconomically disadvantaged area of Chicago and are often the first of their families be accepted to college, the success of the Cristo Rey program is transformative.

In 2016, we added three students from the Corporate Work-Study program, so LP sponsored a total of seven students that school year. LP’s Associates started a mentoring program with the students that year as well, where each student is paired with a team of associates to help them navigate career choices, college applications and resumes.

Environmental

Environmental responsibility is respect for our world and the wise management and use of natural resources.

Did you know LP was the first law firm in the United States to adopt the American Bar Association Model Commitment to Sustainability for a Law Organization (actually, we helped draft it)?

As global environmental issues become more pressing, it's becoming increasingly important for businesses to take the lead in reducing their environmental footprint. As such, Levenfeld Pearlstein has taken concrete steps to assure that we help create a clean and safe environment and reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

Our Environmental Successes
  • First Chicago-based law firm to join the Chicago Climate Exchange and become “carbon neutral” by purchasing credits to offset the firm's carbon footprint.
  • First law firm to reach Tier 1 (highest tier possible) in the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 Chicago Green Office Challenge.
  • Selected as the first law firm to be listed in the Chicago Green Business Directory, published by the Chicago Sustainable Business Alliance.
  • Formed an internal Environmental Task Force, implementing recycling, energy conservation, and the use of environmentally-friendly paper and other materials.
  • Routinely work with clients to prosecute citizen suits under federal environmental laws and publish articles on how clients can go green, comply with environmental legal requirements and file environmental citizen suits (with help from James Brusslan, LP's LEED-accredited environmental attorney).

Less visible (but equally as important) LP Green Practices. We implemented policies that did the following:

  • Required all vendors to use Green Seal certified products.
  • Modified all computer monitor settings to enter sleep mode after 15 minutes of non-use.
  • "Lights Out" for meeting rooms and offices when not in use.
  • Purchased at least 30 percent post consumer-waste recycled paper.

Employees

Employee responsibility is respect for the people we work with.

Respect for employees means more to us than treating employees in a fair and non-exploitive way. It means upholding diversity and fair hiring practices, incorporating responsible firm governance in an ethical and professional manner, dealing with employees and clients in a fair, private and confidential manner, providing a wellness program for employees, and providing a work-life balance for employees, including telecommuting where practicable.

Who We Are

We are run like a corporation – Unlike a traditional law firm, our attorneys are well-supported by a strong, centralized management team. This allows our attorneys to make the best use of their time practicing law and developing the value-focused culture that defines us.

We put our clients first – Doing good legal work isn’t what we aspire to, it’s where we begin. To create an experience that our clients will remember for all the right reasons, we work to understand their business, move with speed and quality, avoid surprises, and then surpass expectations.

We communicate directly – We all need to know the firm's mission and vision to collectively move in the same direction. At LP, you aren’t left to wonder about what’s going on with the firm, you’ll hear directly from our management in State of the Firm reports, administrative updates, or just daily posts on our LP Connect intranet.

We listen and respond – Our success today does not guarantee our success tomorrow. To evolve in meaningful ways, we incorporate feedback from our internal surveys and town hall discussions as we plan for the future. We are not afraid to take risks and try new things – and we reward those people who help move the firm forward.

We care about our people - Yes, we have a comprehensive benefits package, but we go beyond that to make sure people really understand our benefits and can make informed decisions about their health and wellness through initiatives like our Wellness Rewards Program and Financial Wellness Week. We also make time for fun with annual traditions like the LP Chili Cook Off, the LP Open mini-golf tournament, and our annual holiday party (with skits and the LP Band!).

We foster a culture of responsibility – Our goal is to make a difference for our clients, in our community and on behalf of the individuals and organizations that are leading the way. From reducing our carbon footprint, to our charitable grants program to our volunteer days, we live our values. We practice what we preach and we are stronger together as a result.

Our commitment to charitable causes is ongoing and a part of the way we attract and retain talent according to The LP Way™.
