Trusts & Estates Partner Lauren Wolven will be moderating a panel discussion hosted by ACTEC/ALI CLE on topic, “The Senate Went Blue, What Should Estate Planners Do?”
The 2020 election season is finally concluded, bringing the potential for major changes with the Biden-Harris administration moving into the White House and the Democratic party resuming control of the Senate. At the top of many estate planners’ minds is what may happen to the large $11.7 million gift tax exemption currently set to sunset in 2026. Will Congress move up the expiration of this temporarily increased exemption? Another potential development being watched is the possible elimination of the basis step-up for inherited capital gain assets.
The likelihood of retroactive legislation both encourages and raises concerns about making transfers. Should clients make gifts now, and what trust or other estate planning structures and techniques should be applied? In this 90 minute webcast, a panel of experienced practitioners will discuss what may happen and when; the possible implications for your clients; and estate planning measures – both short and long term – to consider using.
This panel of highly experienced estate and tax planners and Fellows of ACTEC will discuss:
- The logistics of retroactivity
- Tried and true planning techniques to consider
- Likely areas of planning attacks by the IRS
- The process for tax law changes in Congress
All registrants will receive a set of downloadable course materials to accompany the program.
